| Duties: | DEFINITION The Registered Nurse is a highly qualified health care provider usually assigned to a hospital or a nursing home institution, or private duty in an institution to provide care for an individual patient or a group of patients. The registered nurse is responsible for assessing; planning, implementing and evaluating the nursing care for a group of patients, as delegated by the head nurse. The RN coordinates care delivered by other members of the health care team to effect positive outcomes in the patient care delivered. RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES The Registered Nurse is responsible for: 1. Utilizing the nursing process to guide nursing care for patients as assigned. She/He: a) Assesses the health status of the patient. b) Formulates an appropriate plan of goals and objectives. c) Implements the plan of care efficiently, effectively and safely. d) Evaluates the care delivered and updates the plan of care appropriately. 2. Interacting and communicating effectively with all members of the health care team. She/He: a) Utilizes established channels of communication and lines of authority. b) Practices effective communication techniques. c) Participates in peer review as appropriate. d) Documents pertinent information in the medical record related to the patient's status, nursing interventions and the patient's response. 3. Displaying evidence of effective Clinical leadership skills. She/He: a) Maintains an effective working relationship with supervisors. b) Copes with stress and change positively. c) Assists other personnel to develop necessary skills and knowledge. d) Plans, organizes and delegates work appropriately. e) Acts as a liaison between patients, physician and family. f) Adequately supervises licensed and unlicensed nursing personnel. 4. Demonstrating a commitment to professional nursing and personal growth and development. She/He: a) Assumes accountability for professional practice. b) Assumes responsibility for individual professional growth. c) Demonstrates discretion in handling confidential information. d) Maintains a well-groomed appearance. e) Demonstrates responsibility to unit in reporting to work on time. f) Maintains competency by attending continuing education programs as per agency requirements and attends staff meetings as appropriate. 5. Accepting and following safe practices. 6. Special duties as assigned. The following activities are unique to this position: 1. Planning, organizing and delegating activities related to patient care delivery. 2. Critical thinking and problem solving. 3. Collaborating with other disciplines and coordinating activities related to the patient's plan of care. 4. Completing the initial nursing assessment and initiating a plan of care that includes discharge planning. 5. Administering blood and blood products. 6. Supervising other licensed and unlicensed personnel. |
| Qualifications: | QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION 1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing-associate degree, diploma, or baccalaureate program. 2. Must be currently licensed or have a valid permit in the state of Texas. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE 1. One year of current experience in field of practice is required. 2. Successful completion of specified orientation program for agency nurses at the hospital to which they are assigned. JOB KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of current standards in theory and practice of nursing. |
